Still life with green shoe1988 junior year in high school
tomato series
1 & 2,
1992-93

3rd year of college

This is when I began using recycled vintage frames,
as integral parts of the artwork. The tomato thing was a commentary on the  banality of everyday life, mixed with some kind of hokey baroque frame.
"Juxtaposition" is the famous high dollar dreaded art skool word I think I was aiming for.

A professor said, "I quite like the use of the old frames, and I'd like you to continue it."

I have never stopped.

However, nowadays I'm not trying to be ironic or excessively clever anymore. Instead, I have grown to expect the frames to be a crucial part of the painting. They are part of the artwork.
This is what I looked like when I painted those tomatos. Pretty freakin scary!
